MDPV (Methylenedioxypyrovalerone) is a psychoactive drug with stimulant properties which acts as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). It was first developed in the 1960s by a team at Boehringer Ingelheim. MDPV remained an obscure stimulant until around 2004 when it was reportedly sold as a designer drug. MDPV, or 3,4-Methylenedioxypyrovalerone, is a synthetic stimulant of the cathinone and pyrrolidine classes.

MDPV is the 3,4-methylenedioxy ring-substituted analog of the compound a-PVP. MDPV shows significant similarities to psychomotor stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine. On the pharmacological level it has been convincingly demonstrated that key targets of MDPV include monoamine transporters and that it functions as a catecholamine-selective transport blocker.

MDPV may be more potent and efficient than cocaine in the ability to induce locomotor activation, tachycardia and hypertension.

MDPV acts as a stimulant and has been reported to produce effects similar to those of cocaine, methylphenidate, and amphetamines. The primary psychological effects have a duration of roughly 3 to 4 hours, with aftereffects such as tachycardia, hypertension, and mild stimulation lasting from 6 to 8 hours.

TOXICOLOGY OF MDPV:

The toxicity and long-term health effects of recreational MDPV use do not seem to have been studied in any scientific context and the exact toxic dosage is unknown
